Description

Pau d’Arco comes from the inner bark of the Taheebo tree (Tabebuia impetiginosa). The tree grows in the forests of Brazil and Argentina, and its dense wood is famous for resisting decay. For generations, South American communities have brewed the bark into a daily tea.

What’s in the Bark

The inner bark contains naturally occurring naphthoquinones, including lapachol and β-lapachone, along with polyphenols, flavonoids, and tocopherols (vitamin E compounds).¹ Researchers are studying these compounds for how they interact with the body’s antioxidant, inflammatory, and microbial-balance systems.

In laboratory testing, pau d’Arco inner bark, including a hot-water infusion, showed antioxidant activity, which researchers linked to its phenolic and flavonoid content.¹

Usage

Add 2 tablespoons to 16–32 oz of hot water. Steep at least 5 minutes, strain, and enjoy. For a stronger tea, simmer for up to 30 minutes.
