He Shou Wu: Chinese Traditional Medicine’s Secret Agent

Traditional Chinese medicine is peppered with folk treatments ranging from lingzhi to cistanche, with plenty more in between.

One of these, known as “he shou wu,” or “black-haired He” (He being a name), is produced from a species of Chinese knotweed given by the proper scientific name Polygonum multiflorum, also known by the common names “Fo-ti” and “tuber fleeceflower.”

Well, as they say, a rose by any other name would smell as sweet, right? So, names aside, let’s talk about why this remarkable plant has made a name for itself in our collection of natural holistic wellness products.

He Shou “Who”?: What Is He Shou Wu?

                                                         cistanche

Pronounced “ho-show-woo,” he shou wu (HSW) has a far and wide-ranging list of potential benefits, some of which are not only validated by tradition but by some studies.

One of the most popular uses for he shou wu has to do with its reputation for possessing anti-aging effects. This plant offers a rich antioxidant profile that is believed to boost superoxide dismutases, or SOD, activity within the body.

SODs are well-known for their role in providing antioxidant protection within the body. In fact, one study has suggested that HSW has produced antiaging effects in rats - though studies in humans are still forthcoming.

By extension, if HSW is effective at counteracting oxidative stress and aging, it may also be potentially effective at fighting against wrinkles, hair loss, and other signs of aging.

In a similar vein, this unique supplement may also be able to improve skin health, hair health (fighting against graying and hair loss). It has been said that HSW induces melanin production, which expressly may fight against graying.

HSW is also recognized as a powerful anti-inflammatory agent, which may also have anti-tumor, antibacterial, and antidiabetic properties. It may also be nueroprotective and nephroprotective.

HSW is also considered to be a powerful blood tonic; that is, a substance that supports blood production as well as optimal levels of nutrients and minerals in the blood. It is believed to help remove impurities that induce inflammation, potentially aiding its other anti-inflammatory properties.

It is also said that HSW helps support a healthy memory and cognition by supplying certain bioactive nutrients, and that it may also help support a healthy immune response - in the latter case, though, the study was conducted on mice, and more research is needed to conclude any such effects in people.

Proponents of he shou wu also claim that it is a tonic for the liver and kidneys, and that HSW supplements help support the growth and health of these organs as well as the growth and development of red blood cells.

Those that have heard that HSW has implications with respect to diabetes will be pleased to learn that by helping to mitigate oxidative stress, the plant may be effective at supporting healthy glucose levels.

In addition to the potential benefits already enumerated, he shou wu may also provide some support with respect to the regulation of overall blood cholesterol levels, combat age-related decline of the nervous system, provide a certain measure of constipation relief, support a healthy mood, and possibly even help with fertility-related concerns and erectile dysfunction.

He Shou Wu and Energy

With all of this being said, one of the prime benefits, and one of the most often-cited, is that he shou wu is a catalyst for healthy energy production in the body.

It is said that he shou wu builds up the body’s “functional reserve,” the potential energy needed to create and heal. In traditional Chinese medicine, it is considered a Jing, or “Yin Essence” that tonifies the blood and helps encourage longevity.

It is said to help with natural energy production and may even be effective for stress management.
